Pump safely this winter! Static electricity builds up in your body as you drive your car. The layers of clothes you’re wearing rub together, your clothes rub against your seat, and the charge builds. In the summer, there’s usually enough moisture in the air for this electric charge to dissipate harmlessly into the water molecules in the air. But in the winter, there are fewer water molecules, which means the charge has no place to go. So, it builds up in your body, waiting for somewhere to go. When you get out of your vehicle at the fuel pump, you have an electrostatic charge built up. It’s very important to discharge your body before you begin the fueling process. A tiny electrostatic shock might not seem like much, but it can be enough to ignite the fuel vapors that escape when you open your gas tank, starting a fire. Discharging yourself is easy. Just touch your car door on the metal frame after you get out and before you begin to refuel. We were all a bit shocked this morning by the drop in temperature last night. The next few days will mark the beginning of our battle with foggy windows. Hot air holds more moisture than cold air, thus when temperatures drop, moisture that was easily suspended in warmer air is released, resulting in condensation - all those little water droplets fogging up your windshield. Clear your windows following these easy steps: 1-Turn your heater on. Start your engine, and using the defroster setting, crank the heater up all the way to absorb excess moisture within your vehicle. Remember: Hot air can hold more moisture. 2-Press the A/C button. This may sound counterintuitive to the whole heater thing, but really what you’re doing is activating a setting on your car’s A/C system that helps dry the air within the cab faster with the help of the coils in your A/C system. 3-Turn air recirculation off. You need fresh air to enter the car as well. Winter air is cold, and as it does not hold much moisture, it is dry. Bringing it into your car ups absorption capacity to more quickly dry the saturated air trapped within. 3-Crack your windows. This helps exchange the humid air in your car with dryer outside air, speeding up the process.
We highly recommend that everyone make the switch to winter tires soon, before snow and ice are a daily concern.
